Replacing a coupler

I have a 1998 Four winns 190 4

I have a 1998 Four winns 190 4.3 and my question is do you need to remove the engine to replace a stripped out coupler and gimbal bearing?

You need to remove both the drive (gimbal bearing) and the engine (coupler) only exception would be if you have the room to slide the engine forward a foot or so once it's undone but few boats have that much room.
