"I need help identifying this engine. I attached 3 links for pictures so you can see it. I would like to know if possible:

Who made them?
When?
What color were they?
Uses for them other than barges?
It has been running and fired with a Model T coil. I wonder what others used on engines like this for ignition?
Any ideas how much it's worth?

I recently aquired a single cylinder, two stroke, spark gap marine engine similar[but not the same manufacture] as yours.
I am having trouble wiring up the ignition system. Are you awaire of any publications or drawings that I could reference?
I also have an old automotive coil that I don't know if it is suitable or not. What did you find out?
Thanks for any help.

"Tom,

There is a boolket called the PALMER GAS ENGINE HANDBOOK, that contains a wealth of infomation on operating and repairing the early one and two cylinder engines. It contains wiring diagrams.

For a coil you need to use what is commonly called a "buzz coil" or a "Model T Ford" coil. It is usually a small wooden box with a vibrator assembly on the end. Various companies sell them as reproduction replacement coils. 12 volt or 6 volt.

We have another web site that is devoted strictly to the early (pre-1940 approx) inboard marine engines, OldMarineEngine.com.
