"I have a 2002 5.7L EFI that has a rough idle, and after a run to the beach then an attempted restart a couple of hours later it may not start. Plugs, wires, and cap are 4 months old. I have checked and replaced the fuel filter. No water seen. The only thing I have noticed is on a cold start there is some black exhaust. Pulling the plugs confirm a rich mixture. Any ideas? I am at a loss"

"A friend had the same problem and found to be the ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. You can check it with an OHM meter 70 F = 3,400 ohms, 160F = 450ohms it is worth the test and can be done with the sensor still installed. Use the Temp Gauge on the instrument panel for reference. Remember the sensor is non-linear, so for other temperatures you will need the table from the work shop manual.
