Mercruiser alpha drive resevoir overflow during water test

Did you fill the drive with a pump through the bottom drain hole? If you drain the drive you can NOT refill through the reservoir. There is a small passage between the upper and lower gear case. The lower case will be empty because the air can't get out through the lube above it. That air would heat up expand and blow lube into the reservoir.

When I serviced the drive I drained and refilled thru the bottom drain hole until it came out the top plug-upper drive and then topped off the resevoir just above the fill line to allow for any air to purge from upper drive. Don't know what would cause resevoir to overflow when underway. Stumped...any ideas?
 
You lost the rubber Cap seal w

You lost the rubber Cap seal when refilling. The drive builds pressure when it gets warm and this perssure caused the bottle to leak.
check for that black rubber seal(flat o-ring) in the cap.
