"After some time off, I started my engine and it started right up. On the way out of the harbor, the engine lost power. Motor runs but will not rev up under load. Back at the dock at idle, the motor runs but speed varies from idle to fast repeatedly without any change in throttle position. Any ideas?"

"Found the problem Friday afternoon. The fuel filter was clogged up. I had looked at it before and thought it "looked okay." Wrong.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. At idle the fuel pump is running slowly and can't get enough fuel through the clogged filter. Finally, the mixture leans out and the engines races. Then the fuel pump catches up and the motor goes back to idle."
