Gimbal bearing installation tool needed

I will be installing a new gim

I will be installing a new gimbal bearing in my 1986 4.3 Alpha One. Is the tool to install the bearing listed in Mercruiser Manual really needed. Or can I use something else?

Do you think I could use a socket,that covers the outer of the bearing to drive it in?"
 
You will need a Very big socke

You will need a Very big socket. The bearing is driven into place driving on the bearing (tollerance ring ) aluimun collar. If you drive on the bearing it will move in the tollerance ring and distort the ring
