Take the alternator and have it tested. If it fails buy a new one.

"Gauge was fluctuating and now reads 0 volts? If it is not a serpentine belt, is the belt loose and slipping or broken? It should be snug with a little deflection less than 1/2 inch when pushed in the middle. If it's good check the output wire at the alternator for 13-14.5 volts DC at idle. Use a digital voltmeter to check it. Get a cheap pocket size from Radio Shack about $10. No output on a single wire type alternator with engine running; it's dead. Remove the ground wire from the battery first, then remove the alternator and have it checked at your auto parts store or marine service center. Replace it with a marine type only. If the voltage is there, check it at the battery. It should be the same voltage reading except 0.1 to 0.2 volts less. If it is good at the battery and everything works, then check the gauge wires for the same voltage. If it's there at the gauge but does not read on it, use a jumper from another gauge ground to the ground side (black wire) of the gauge. Still no reading, gauge is shot. If it reads voltage, ground is bad."
