A mercuser I/O 198 and 898
 
The 898 decodes as 8 cylinder;

The 898 decodes as 8 cylinder; 198 hp. Built from 77 to 84 or so. It is the 5.0L 305 GM engine. Not sure about the 198; it sounds like the same thing using a different model number system.
The 888 was 8 cylinder; 188 hp (Ford 302).
I have no idea why Merc has used so many different and stupid model number systems along the way.
