"I just found an old pre-alpha

"I just found an old pre-alpha outdrive (everything outside the boat) for $100 at a yard sale! could not believe it!
upon getting it home I only found one problem- the brass shift shaft on the lower unit is broke off. according to the local mechanic (and my own research) this shaft is supposed to pull right out and the new one dropped right in.
no matter what position i turn it in, pulling/tugging/ lightly prying does not get it out.
any ideas. I have never tore apart a lower unit, and am not really ready to try it yet!"
 
seperate the upper from the lo

seperate the upper from the lower.(drain first) shaft is held in place by cotter pin below casting. note: washer on lower shift shaft seal is important. make sure you keep it on when reassembling.

"Pay attention to how you install the new one...i still cant get mine positioned correctly yet ..short arm front, short arm back, rotate clockwise.,etc,etc,etc,,,,still not right. fixing to give up and get a boat with an outboard !..lol"
