"The engine strats and runs fine. After running a short time the breaker pops, engine continues to run. When I shut off the engine will not start again until breaker is reset. also volt meter on dash show charging over 18volts... Any ideas on what can be wrong & could both item be releated??????????"

It sounds like the alternator voltage regulator is either defective or its base is not making a good ground.

18 volts! Yikes! Your battery will be toast if that continues.

"Apart from "cooking" (evaporating all electrolyte) your battery, you are also at risk frying all your electronic equipment onboard.
Waiting any longer in detecting the fault can turn into a VERY expensive experience...

Take off the alternator, go to "any" reputable shop that repairs generators, alternators, and starters and have them test it. If it is the voltage regulator, a new one is easy and quick to install!"
