"I have a 1966 mark twain 16' with a mercruiser 120. When I drop the hammer down at the hole shot, The engine coughs and backfires, but when I increase the throttle slowly, it runs OK. i am leaning towards carb problems, any ideas?"

"Another common cause of this is incorrect timing and dwell. Check the dwell first (with a meter), set to correct specs and then set the timing. This may fix your problem and is a lot cheaper than a carb."
 
Check the accelerator pump in

Check the accelerator pump in the carb and see if it is pumping when you open the throttle plate.
