Penta 270 leaking oil

"I have noticed that a small amount of oil seems to be leaking from my penta 270 outdrive. I can't seem to find where it is leaking from exactly, but the oil level in the outdrive does seem to be going down. This doesn't happen on land, so maybe it only leaks when it is running and under pressure. Does anyone have a simple solution? Can you add a "stop Leak" type of solution to the oil, or is there a simple gasket change that I could do to fix it? Thanks for the help!"

"Likely sources are the upper drive input shaft seal and the propeller shaft seal. If the leak is through the upper gear seal, the oil will be trapped in the u-joint rubber boot. If the leak is through the propeller shaft seal, you may also experience water ingress, in which case the oil inside the outdrive will be milky. If either of the seals is gone your best bet is to replace it (the SELOC or Clymer manuals will guide you through the process).

I would not recommend to use a "stop leak" solution, but you may want to try to use SAE40 oil instead of 10-30 or 10-40 and see if this makes any difference."

I too have a oil leak in the upper gear housing. But my questions is what kind of sterndrive lubricant does a Volvo 270 outdrive use? I ask because the leaking oil smells like 90 weight gearcase oil.

On marinemechanic.com I found the following statement "270/280/290 Volvo sterndrives DO NOT always use 30 w engine oil for lubricant." So now I am concerned.

Did the Volvo 270 ever use 90 weight gearcase oil as a lubricant?

If someone put 90W in there would it cause any damage? What effect would it have? If I drain it to change the oil seal and then refill it with 10W30 will that cause any damage?

Help!

"Not really, but just make sure you have a copy of the Seloc or Clymer manuals available when you do the job. You may consider replacing the shift cover seal as well."

I'm looking at the on-line Seloc manual right now. Which gasket or O-ring is the culprit that I most likely have to replace? I'm hoping I don't have to completely take it apart. Thanks for the help!

Difficult to say which seal is likely to be leaking (if any), but if you don't find oil in the drive bellows, and you want to limit yourself to the upper gear, then you can try replacing the shift cover seal. However, it is not uncommon seeing the lower seals fail, especially if you caught some fishing line in the prop shaft."
