1979 Evinrude 70 hp Over heating problem

"recently replaced water pump,

"recently replaced water pump, pees well, runs great on muffs in driveway. When in the water and has to push the boat, runs for about 10 minutes and pee turns to exhaust, then overheats. Someone said to pull of exhaust manifold, clean out if needed, circulation channels could be clogged with sand, etc.,replace gaskets, thermostat, could this be the problem? Please help!"

"Pull the manifold and clean real good inside and replace all the gaskets there and replace the T-stats

Did you replace the whole pump or just the impeller.

I sent you a service bulletin and you can disregard it. It would not pertain to this motor. I miss took you for some one else.

"Check the compression which should be approximately 100 psi and even on all cylinders. It's possible that you have a failing head gasket which would leak the combustion power into the water passage area.

And as Willard hints at.... it's best to replace the entire water pump assy, making sure that the surfaces between the impeller housing and plate, and the plate and lower unit casting are sealed properly to avoid having the pump draw air."
