"Hello Folks,

Just found a 10 ft oil slick around my boat, after doing some checks i found oil is leaking from the tilt rams. I have a Volvo penta 3.0 gs with SX Drive, after checking with Volvo they dont make a replacement seal kits, they just want to sell me new ram (Blood suckers). Can any help me out with some cheaper ideas, i just need the right sized o rings and it should work i hope?

Thanks
Shaun"

"I am not aware of any Sierra kit available for your rams. However, if I was in your situation, what I would do is first inspect the ram when fully extended and if you see no scratches on it, perhaps take it apart (that is, if it not a sealed unit that cannot be dismantled) and try to get the individual seals from a shop specialized in hydraulics, or even from an automotive shop if you just need o-rings. I surely would not give Volvo Penta the pleasure of ripping me off without first trying other available avenues.

If you find that the ram is scratched, just dispose it, for it will leak even if you install new seals.

"Morten, this is one of the topics where your experience may come in handy. For what I see, the trim cylinders for the SX and the Cobra seem to be different, but I am not sure about the internal seals, which I understand from your post they should be identical. If the same seals are used in both cylinders, there is a seal kit listed for the OMC (item number 65 on the lower link) but not for the Volvo. The seal kit is relatively inexpensive (about $24), but the trick is to find out whether it will indeed fit the Volvo cylinder. What do you think?"

"If not totally mistaken the internal seals are the same. By the way the SX was designed by OMC. In this case the end cap seal seems to be the critical one. Rod dia the same, end cap dia the same -then there should be no problem. Anyway the end cap seal is a standard size seal that may be bought from a reasonable well equipped machine store. Just be careful when dismantling the piston and valve from the rod, note what goes where and how, there are no manuals available of that part to my memory. (Not familiar with the Seloc/Clymer)"
