What to do with 470 Merc

I just purchased an 1986 Chapp

I just purchased an 1986 Chapperal with I/O 470. I have been investigating this motor and it seems to be a love/hate thing. The motor has bad rod bearings and needs rebuilt. Iam having issuses finding parts and new bearings. So my question is should I rebuild or replace and if replace what is y'alls recommendations Thanks to all!!

"ahhh ...the 3.7L aluminum block iron "big block" head. I've done one of these with a thrown rod. Very easy to jam a short block in it and be back on the water that afteroon.

Seriously... would you rather be up to your ears in rings, bearings and internals or pay a little more, leave the reman to those that do it for a living and get it done in a day and have a warranty? Just thoughts.

Here's a long block (with head) for $1400.
