"I have a mercruiser 120 and the engine had no power. I discovered that the choke was not opening all the way. The carb needs replaced, it is in bad shape. I was told I could replace this "heat" choke carb with an electric choke carb. Should I do that or clean out the manifold that feeds the heat choke and replace it with the same type of carb?"

This is your call. The electric works ok but needs to be wired in. For most change overs the electric choke just goes in place of the mechanical one on the side of the carb. Depending on the model carb it is.
There really is nothing different about the carb itself.

Does anyone see an advantage with either one?

I can easily clean the manifold where the heat comes from or I can easily wire the electric choke.

I would simply clean the choke. There are enough repairs to make that can cost, a simple cleaning and you are good to go. Save the money for when something really goes wrong! there is no performance difference."
