I have a 1987 Mercruiser 3.7L 165 and I am trying to set the timing. I have two different sources for timing info. The first says to set the timing to 4 degrees and the second says 8 degrees. Which is correct?

"Either will work fine- it's not that much of a difference. I would switch to electronic ignition, if you haven't already. If you switch, you'll need to reset the timing but it's well worth it. Since the motor is almost 20 years old, I would also change the timing advance springs and make sure your advance mechanism allows the total advance to go where it should. The weights can rust in place and become unbalanced or just become generally unstable, leaving you to scratch your head, trying to figure out why.

If it has vacuum advance, this doesn't apply but you should make sure that works as designed, too."
