"The oil seal on the vertical shaft is bad.
What model drive?
I just went through the same problem on my Alpha 1 (Gen II), had to pull the drive off and tear down the upper unit to get to it."
 
"Keith, It is usually either

"Keith, It is usually either the shift seal or the driveshaft seal. "Normally" it is the driveshaft seal. You can buy a new waterpump base with the new seal already installed. Make sure the part of the driveshaft that the seal rides on is smooth and has no grooves which will tear up the new seal."
