Outdrive noise

"I am putting an old boat back together, after finally getting the motor in and running good there seems to be an odd clanking might be the best desciption when the motor runs up to about 1500-2000 rpm. There is no noise when the motor is at idle, and it makes no difference in sound whether in gear, or nuetral. Sounds like it is coming from the outdrive. is it possible that the u-joint is bad, or the gimbal? I have yet to have the outdrive apart as it will be my first and I can't seem to find where I set my manual down!!!!!!!!
Has anyone had a noise from the outdrive like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!"

There is a way that you can find out for sure. Pull off the drive and look at the U joints and inspect the gimble bearing. Good luck.
