"I HAVE A ENGINE NOISE AT IDLE

"I HAVE A ENGINE NOISE AT IDLE OR IN FORWARD OR REVERSE. THE NOISE IS A NOCK OR A RHYTHMIC THUMP. IT IS MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE IN THE WATER THAN ON THE DRIVEWAY WITH THE WATER HOSE ATTACHED TO THE LOWER UNIT.
IT IS NOT AS NOTICEABLE AT SPEED. I RAN IT SUNDAY FOR 2 HOURS AT ABOUT 4000 RPMS, VERY SMOOTH.
IS THE TIMING OFF? COULD IT BE TIMING CHAIN OR TIMING GEAR NOISE? IT DOESEN'T IDLE VERY WELL."

"It could be a flapper in the exhaust, they loose the rubber molded on the edges and then you have steel bouncing off the exhaust pipe. Use a screw driver on your ear like a stethoscope and if its in the exhaust keep driving it. There is no timing chain in that engine."

When was the last time the drive and U joints were serviced and the engine alignment/coupler were checked?

THE ENGINE WAS SERVICED LAST FALL. I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE ALIGNMENT/COUPLER.
