Need to hold key on to keep boat running

"Helpin a buddy out. He has an older 4 Winns with a Merc engine (4 cylinder I think). When we were out on the lake his boat did fine for most of the day. At the end of the day the boat died, and in order to keep it running to get it on the trailer they had to hold the key all the way over to the start or "crank" position to keep it running.

Any ideas???"

1. The ballast resistor circuit is burnt out (or has a bad connection), and

2. You'll soon need a new starter!

"Check the safety switch and lanyard. If the switch goes bad or the plastic button wears, the lanyard won't pull it out enough to engage it. If it has the toggle switch, it could still go bad.

It could still be what Jeff said, so check the voltage before and after the resistor."
