"In all likelihood it is a Volvo engine. Look at the engine nameplate in the block in way of the starter and the bellhousing. It should say AQ-followed by 3 numbers and a letter. Then go to the following Volvo link and download the relevant brochure.

It should not run after you shut it down if you use midgrade fuel, and octane booster should not harm the engine. In any case, it may keep running after shutwodn if someone removed the resistor in the purple wire going to the alternator."
