" I have a 36' Sport fish. I am installing new engines and am considering moving the exhaust outlet to the side rather than the back. I have questions as to how far from the stern to put the exhaust. Some say too close and the fumes will be sucked back to the stern. Some say too far foward and the fumes will be sucked into the cockpit. Also, will it be quieter comming out the side? "
 
It doesn't matter where y

It doesn't matter where you locate them on the side say within three feet of the trasom. But it is important that you make a deflection of the water flow down the side of the hull in front of the outlet so as to let the exhaust leave without restriction. Quiet comes with proper mufflers.
