"I have an 89 Bayliner Capri with the 2.3L OMC Cobra drive. When put into Forward, it makes a clanking noise, but the prop does turn. This does not happen in Reverse or Neutral. I suspect either the dog clutch or mating teeth on the forward drive gear are damaged. Does anyone have another suggestion for me to check?
I would like to remove the lower unit to inspect these gears. I have seen a warning in another post on damaging the shift cable if the lower unit is removed while the rest of the drive remains on the boat. Is this correct? The rest of the steps in the 6/27 post on Prop Shaft Removal seem straightforward. Does anyone have any other advice on this? Thanks!"
