How do you tell if the water p

How do you tell if the water pump on a Mercruiser 5.0 is bad?. I'm getting water from the lower unit but doesn't seem to circulate through the block. Engine cuts itself off.
 
Unlikely the engine recirculat

Unlikely the engine recirculation pump is bad. The pulley would be running out indicating a bad bearing and seal or a drip from the vent hole on the bottom side first. You may have a stuck or improperly installed thermostat. If the water pump in the drive has been chewed up before there could be pieces floating around restricting water flow.
