My starter cracked through abo

My starter cracked through about 5 mm behind the outside bolt. It still works thanks to zip ties holding it in place (it was swiveling towards the engine and not getting contact). Any guess as to why this happened? Is there suppose to be a bracket that supports the starter?

"My old 3.0 in a Bayliner did not have the bracket in front. Result, a broken bolt and a starter flopping about. (Sound familiar?) I was ablle to repair it in place, but I never used it again without the bracket in front (that keeps it from vibrating and breaking the bolts). I had to make up a bracket.
