I had this happen with a bad m

I had this happen with a bad mechanical fuel pump. The pump could not provide enough fuel in the carb float bowl at higher rpms.

Then check the old 1s for Water or other contaminants..."

I agree with Bondo. Dump the fuel filter into a jar and see if it is collecting water. Migh also open the top of the carb or otherwise drain the bowl.
 
thanks for all the help. I did

thanks for all the help. I did a full tune up and set the dwel and timing and ran the engine WOT. Again after a peroid of time I experienced a power drop. When I rechecked the dwell I found that the points had moved due to a stripped out holding screw. I managed to get it secrued for the time being and it runs well. I also found out that the helm tach reads 3800 when the dwel meter reads 4600. I have the electronic ignition on order and have to believe it will cure the problem. Thanks to all for the input.
