Starter continues to run after turning key

"Turn the key and the starter ingages for about 20 sec. then stops, pulled the starter wire of the ignition switch and just touched it to hot and it did the same thing, is there a starter relay on the mercruiser 3.0L besides the solenoid? I don't believe it is the solenoid on the starter itself, as I think the problem would be opposite."

its the solenoid. They get overheated and the piston expands making it hard to engage/dis- . Might as well buy a new starter. They are cheap on ebay now...90 bucks shipped most of the time.

Or have it rebuilt. Most cities have a rebuilder who can do it to marine spec.
