"thank-you for your suggestions..
can the oil cooler be inspected to see if it is the problem? &can it be easily replaced?
also i did know about the head gasket possibility, and was wondering if you think re-torqueing the head has any chance of fixing it? (or if i should only consider replacing the head gasket,
assuming the oil cooler is not the reason for losing coolant.)"

I don't know much about your engine, but presumably if you have an oil cooler you can take it off and inspect it. On my 4.236 for example I have a dual oil and transmission cooler that looks like two tubes bolted to the back of my engine block and has an in and out for the cooling water and connections for transmission and engine oil. Assuming you have access it's an easy thing to replace. If the zincs aren't changed regularly then that can lead to corrosion that can expose the cooling water to the oil. Again, I'm not sure about your setup and my only experience has been with my own engine, but it's worth checking into regardless. Also,I've never had to deal with a head gasket leak, but my guess is that if this is the problem simply torquing down on the head is not the answer unless.. I suppose.. the bolts are significantly loose.

Before I did anything though I would check the simple things. Also I think its a good idea to flush out the contaminated oil right way."
