"I have a mercruiser alpha 1 leg 2001 that sounds as if it has a bad gimble. I know this not to be the case as it is a new gimble bearing. It sounds worse if the drive is trimmed up. I'm wondering if it is a bearing in the drive unit itself, anyone have any ideas?"
 
Possibly your U joints. If you

Possibly your U joints. If your leg (boat leg that is) is off check for play in the joints.

"When ujoints go bad, they often make a racket when in the "bent" position. There may be no play either and they could still be bad. Any cracks or splits in the drive bellows (thus allowing water in to the bearing/ujoint housing?"
