"My Mercruiser 5.0 220hp stern

"My Mercruiser 5.0 220hp sterndrive on my 24' Bayliner Ciera weighing approc 5500 #, when throttling up runs at about 5000 rpm @ 30mph, this seems excessive to me and probably not fuel efficient. What could the problem be? And any ideas for a fix?"

Check your Prop for correct Diameter and Pitch. I would imagine a call to a Prop repair shop would find out what is called for. Maybe an Internet search? Al W.

Prop pitch is to low. If you have a 19 pitch go to a 21 pitch (new) prop. ( a 17 p to a 19)
A rebiult will not have the proper cupping.

You will not gain much all you will do is loose ~300 rpms. It will also take a bit longer to get on plane.

The real answer is about 60 - 80 horse power minimum is in order.
