1978 OMC 800 wonbt shift into reverse

"305, mechanical/hydraulic outdrive. Last year it worked fine.

Got it started, checked the fluid and overfilled the upper outdrive.

Put it in the water and it worked. Reversed out of the marina, clean engagement and no hickups.

As I ran around the delta, it started to not going into reverse. It would try but the gears were not fully engaging. I checked the cable and there seemed to be plenty of movment (maybe too much).

So I have several questions if anyone can help I would be very appreciative and buy beers if you make it to Lost Isle.

1. Is it possible overfilling is causing a problem with reverse?

2. What is the best manual for understanding the unit without multi-year / model confusion?

3. Who is the best OMC mechanic in the Sacramento Delta?

"Mine did that this year and the timing of the rack gear was not set right. But if yours is in the middle on the dial over the engine, for reverse then you might have another issue"
