Where did he jumper it, right at the starter itself or at the assist solenoid? Do you have a battery charger, you should make sure it's fully charged incase you have something on board slowly draining it."

"it is a 1988 omc 3.0 cobra, jump started it at the solenoid, originally had 2 batteries that were bad. we installed 1 battery that according to interstate is appropriate for the boat, it is not a deep cycle battery--i will get the battery checked or possibly swapped out for a deep cycle, it had 2 deep cycle batteries on when we got it. any help is appreciated thanks for input this is great"

"Using the diagram at this link for a reference you will need to measure for 12v at the yellow/red wire on the solenoid while trying to start it, if there is 12v when starting then it could be a bad solenoid, if there isn't 12v then you'll have to trace it back, could be a bad ignition switch or even the safety neutral switch in the gearshift control.

"It is in neutral? The kill switch with the lanyard,If you have one,i would disconnect and put the wires together to see if it fixs the problem.

You did clean all the connections.Disconnect the battery good connections clean and shiny?Leave disconnected.

Follow the neg cable off the battery to the ground on the motor, clean that connection shiny.

With battery still disconnected clean the starter connections.

Reconnect the battery and try to start it."
