How can i get more power on my Merc 57 260Hp 350 CID

The difference between a 260 hp and a 350 mag (270-280 hp) is the intake manifold and the flame arrestor.

Knowing this, How much mechanical work can you do and how much are you willing to spend.

A cam, intake and a recalibrated carb should get you near 300 hp."
 
I have a 85 mercruiser 260hp..

I have a 85 mercruiser 260hp...the carb is original to it and is a quadrajet...

there is a mercruiser metal tag on the carb..that says 260/270.

how can I get the 270 hp or more out of my boat? You're saying buy a magnum flame arrestor?

The trouble is it all has to GET OUT thru a inefficiant exaust manifold.so unless you plan on running inverted open headers, forget it.

i have talked with the guys that built my boat and this is what they have told me to do:

1. Vortec heads from a chevy truck
2. edelbrock rpm air gap intake
3. 492 thousandths lift cam
4. valve springs that will accept that cam
5. 1.6 ratio roller rockers

that combo took a concord boat from 56 to 69 at 500 ft above sea level"

The Vortec heads will experince Coil Bind.....

They're limited to about .480 lift, without some Machine work..."
