Voltmeter

1988 5.7 Mercruiser
Voltmeter jumps up to 18+ volts sometimes...usually at 13-14. Any thoughts?
As an aside turning lights on or blower on changes some gauge indications ie: temp jumps up 10 degrees.

Disconnect the battery CABLES and check the connections on the alternator for corrosion or loose wires as suggested. The +18 volts COULD mean the voltage regulater is about to quit.
