1989 omc shifting problem

hey all im new to this forum so bare with me. i got a 1989 2.3l omc my problem is that my engine was getting hot so i had to spllit the lower unit and replace a couple seals i coulnt get the shift rod undone but i was able to get the new seals in it so i actually didnt get them split clear apart problem is not that it is hard shifting it worked fine before i have read i may need to adjust the shift rod but how do i do this how do i get it loose from the upper or lower end so i can get them apart any help is greatly appriciated thanks
