"I have just put a 454 into a 29 ft bayliner. We have the engine running and tomorrow I will be setting the timing properly, but I need a good starting point for the jets in the carb. It is a Holley marine model 4160. It came from a big block Ford. The engine currently belches out black smoke when you start it, or goose the throttle. I know I will have to take it to the lake to really set it up correctly, but I am looking for a good starting point. Anyone have any ideas?"

"Unless they have been changed, the stock jets should work fine. On that black smoke; is the choke opening all the way? If so, the accelerator pump might be a bit too aggresive (rare). Holley sells a tuning kit to adjust the amount of squirt.

If you backfired it at all rep

If you backfired it at all replace the power valves. They will be dumping fuel if they are popped.
