How many hours of use?
Any recent work done to outdrive? Has it been removed?

Did it shift ok during use during the day and how long did you use it?

What were your rpms?

First look at where the shift control cable and the short shift cable mount on the shift bracket and look for something loose or missing. Maybe a cotter pin or nut.

If all of this looks good then the next thing to do is to disconnect the short cable from the bracket and see if you can manually get forward engagement. You need a second person to rotate the prop when doing this.

DO NOT HAVE YOUR KEYS IN THE INGITION!!!!!!!!!!!!! when doing this.

With the short cable removed from the bracket you PUSH the plastic end and have some one turn the prop counter clock wise.

Did you get forward engagement?

If yes the let us know.

If no then something is wrong with the shift linkage at the gimbal housing.

Give us more info so we can form a better opinion.

If you try real hard does feel like you are trying to spin the engine over?
