Test in barrel of water

"Hello, I'm a newbie here and have this question.
I replaced the water pump and want to test it to see if all is well.
I want to use a barrel of water as where the boat is, is not close to a water source. If I have the Prop on it shortly splashes the water out.
So here is my question: Can I remove the prop and do a test or am I goofy?"

If you want to run it in the barrel for any length of time just throw in some ice. I make 2" thick blocks of ice for my cooler using rectangular cake pans. They fit over the goodies just right, last more than a day and keep them icy cold."

I guess the barrel was not deep enough to get the water above the pump as I found out the hard way after destroying the new one!
So I replaced it and moved the boat to where I could hook up the ear muff and all went well."
 
another thing with the barrel

another thing with the barrel is that the water comming from the exhaust wil splash out. The barrel will empty too low for the intake ports on the outdrive...BADDDD
