"I have owned a 1954 16HP with bail-a-matic since the early 70's (It was my fathers then). I'm not an expert on the motor itself except to say that parts are definitely harder to find than a Johnson/Evinrude, or even Mercury of the day. When you say you can't figure out spark, does that mean that it has none, or that you haven't tested it yet?
If you need, there are some parts listed at http://tinyurl.com/5jbekh

One name that keeps coming up with every Scott Atwater outboard is "The Scott Guy" - http://web.a-znet.com/~scottguy/index.html"

"Not knowing the year, I could only guess. My 1954, which is gold, with bail-a-matic is 1/2 a pint to the gallon.
If you have no spark at all, it's time to remove the flywheel and check the coils for cracks. Replace if necessary (the tinyurl link above has them). Also check the points to make sure they aren't pitted, rusted etc. The point gap on my old Scott-Atwater is .020 (it seems all the other ones from the same era are the same).
Good luck."

Re: I just got this scott atwater

I was having problems with spark on the 7.5 bail o matic. Points needed cleaning. Bail O matics have water pump issues.
