"My dad has a 1992 century 19ft boat. It has an inboard motor that is a 4 cylinder 140. The boat has a alpha1 lower unit merc cruiser with a 3 bladed stainless prop. As you can tell I am a newbie to the boats. Anyway, he told me that when he was on the lake a week ago. He would accelerate and the rpm's would jump and then go back down. He said that it was almost like a transmission would do on a car. What do you guys think?"
 
Prop hub may be slipping. Try

Prop hub may be slipping. Try another prop. If it is slipping at the hub a prop shop can repair it.
 
Maybe he had it trimmed up a l

Maybe he had it trimmed up a little too far and
the prop was ventilating on acceleration.

"So if the prop hub is bad, it would act like a slip in a car transmission? Where one second your fine and the next it revs the rpms, then goes back to normal."

"yep, that's what they do. Other possibility is the coupler on the rear of the engine, but much more likely the prop."
