I would like to put a tachomet

I would like to put a tachometer on my engine.
Would an automotive type work?If not where can I
get one at a reasonable cost.I used this engine
the first time today.It would tilt up only if it
was in forward gear.The way I read the user book
it should tilt in forward or neutral.Am i reading
it wrong?
