Hooking up portable tank to inboard

I've read on others sites

I've read on others sites about hooking a portable tank up to the inlet on the fuel / water separator to see if the problem is before or after the filter. Will this work?

"I tried the portable tank worked great. I did notice running on the portable tank the boat seemed to idle slightly higher. Could have been anything. However, I'm taking it in to a mechanic tuesday to have the carb looked at, the timing checked and check the pump psi is between 4 and 6?"
