"What scan tool to use to analyze volvo pentas? I want to find out fault codes and so on to be able to verify or fix the engine without bringing it to the shop... It's a 5.0Gi 1999 but I hope Volvo use the same connectors, protocols and so on on all engines."

Do a search on eBay for "marine efi scan tool."

This spring I saw a guy who made some scan tools for cheap - $19. You connect it to a plug of the ECM and match the blinking lights to a diagnostic chart. Much cheaper than the $700+ scan tools.
