have a 1988 searay wondering h

have a 1988 searay wondering how much play should be in the wheel seem to always be trying to catch up with it under idle or no wake speeds dont notice it as much under higher speeds

This is not a steering cable issue.

with the boat out of the water go to the outdrive and move the outdrive left to right and right to left very slowly and only just enough so as NOT to move the steering cable. This checks the amount of slop/wear at the steering pin/gimbal ring. Note all i/o's at slow speed will have some drifting at low to no speeds. Mine does. Also if your outdrive is not all the way down it will magnify this issue. Nature of the beast if you will. The play in the outdrive acts like a loose rudder!
