"was wondering if anybody knew if an 87 model 5.7 uses a roller cam. just got my vortec heads from the machine shop and need to know what else I need to get besides another intake. Any suggestions for roller rockers, lifters, etc. would be helpful"

"Don't think so for roller cam but is possible, I use pro comp 1.5 roller rockers (ebay) and retro roller lifter by comp cams (summit racing). be sure to use marine
grade head gaskets and hopefully you have stainless valves and bronze valve guides.

"the heads are stock off of a 97 chevy truck, all of the GM components were reused except for new valve seals"

Marine heads are only different in that they have bronze guides and stainless valves.
bronze guides are corrosion resistant and are
self lubricating. stainless valves are corrosion resistant as well. bronze guides are also a bettor choice for sustained high rpm usage and
transfer heat from valves at a faster rate
and will bettor protect exhaust valve from heat damage. In doing so engine will be somewhat less prone to run on once turned off and also less prone to pre ignition or detonation.

"I just rebuilt an 87, 260 mercruiser. The engine had a camshaft, but the machinist pointed out to me that the block was set up for a roller cam.He pointed to mounts on the block and said he would need to drill and tap these areas. I rebuilt it stock with a camshaft. I did not notice any stainless valves or bronze valve guides on the original heads. The magnum 350 engine of that year I believe used a roller cam and some say beefier internals.

"The guides are cheap but, changing guides would not be worth the cost of machining and would be a bettor choice to just get Vortec heads at around 500 dollars. You will be fine with what you have but may be a tad bit of a shorter life span as marine aps are usually at or near top hp levels all the time compared to vehicle usage witch is 10-15%, 99% of the time.

Chris,
if it was set up for roller lifters it would of had the lifters retainer plate mountings already.
what he did is common with chevy aps as to save alot of money, rather than using expensive retro roller lifters, drilling for retainer mounting allows for use of stock (OEM) roller lifters witch are cheap. This can be done on any GM small block ever made. I did the same when I built my stroker 383 and saved about 300 bucks
rather than using retro rollers.

"Kurt, thats what I meant. My block has the retainer plate mounts. The cost of drilling the mounts was cheap, thats why the machinist gave me the option. I found a few roller set-ups on ebay, but decided to go stock. I was driving myself nutty trying to decide what parts to use,(Roller, Forged pistons,Vortex heads, etc.) so I employed the KISS method(Keep It Simple Stupid!)

I have an 87 21 ft. bow rider. 260HP stock is MORE than enough to move this boat.
