I have a 1985 engine w/ a stringer outdrive. I am pulling the engine to replace it with a new one but the engine won't slide away from the bell housing. How do you un-jam the shaft?

"I’m guessing that you have the 800 series out drive and not the cobra. I can remember what year they switched.

The 800 type engine is pulled with the intermediate housing and bell housing attached. First you have to remove the lower unit and unscrew the rubber transom seal.

I have thought about pulling just the engine on mine but I was afraid that the intermediate drive shaft would get damaged during the reinstall. I you do plan to go that route, keep in mind that there are two dowel pins that align the bell housing and the block that will offer a moderate amount of resistance. The shaft sould just slide out unless it didnt have any lube or the engine was sitting in water and rusted. Let us know how it goes."
