"I'm wondering if I'm asking too much from my engine!?
Have a Grampian Discovery 7.9 (26 ft) with the little MD5A (7.5HP). Have what I believe is the standard prop: 2-blade fixed, 14x7.
Pushes the boat up to hull speed (~6kts) no probs in open water. Engine appears to run fine, appears to reach target RPM of 2500 RPM.
However, our harbour has heavy weed growth. When trying to get through this, I can't seem to get the engine RPM above that of idle - no matter how much throttle I give it. Forward or reverse, no real change. Once I get to open water, and 'deweed', the engine runs fine.
I'm assuming that the prop is getting bogged down / wrapped with weeds. Am I simply asking too much of this combo - small diesel, big prop, etc. Or should I be looking into getting work done on my engine - tune up, etc?
