"I had to replace my starter and got the wrong rotation one from the marina. I tried starting it for a minute or two before realizing it. Ever since (with the correct starter now in), the engine is running a little rough and when I go past half throttle it completely bogs down (and has backfired a little). Coincidence with the starter thing? That's what I'm thinking but have changed the fuel filters, sprayed the carb, etc. Next I guess is to check plugs, wires, distributor, timing (?)."

I could be wrong but it doesn't seem like that would change anything in the ignition. Sounds like maybe the valves or pushrods got damaged. I'd do a compression check first.

"There is a chance you sucked some water in and bent a valve. Some water pumps are bi-directional. Even in backwards mode, the pump still pumps, except now, you're valves aren't closing at the right time to insure that water doesn't suck back in the cylinder.

I'm with Eddie, I'd check the compression. Leakdown too, if you can.
