I have a trim gauge on a alpha

I have a trim gauge on a alpha 1 leg that shows either all in or all out. It also jumps all over the place when moving the leg in or out. I have not pulled the sender out as yet. Any suggestions?

I have the same issue on a 1989 Sea Ray with an Alpha 1
 
Pull the sender and operate by

Pull the sender and operate by hand to see if it works correctly. also check all the wires to the system. the most common problem is worn insulation and corroded wires.
